Monday, 1 May 2006 - Sunshine Coast Hinterland!

Today was a public holiday in Queensland (Labour Day), and Avis closed at Midday so I had to pick up the car this morning for another trip to Kingaroy tomorrow (and it's a red one ;) As such, I had a car all to myself for the day so I had to take advantage of that! Almost a year ago, Mo and I hired a car for a weekend trip around the Gold Coast Hinterland, so I decided to get myself a tour guide and head for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland this time since there is no way I could ever bike there. The shot on the right is looking east towards Maroochydore on the coast from one of the many lookouts.

"3 hour erection" - who needs Viagra! ;)

Would you buy home-made jam from a place that also sells cow shit? There's another sign on the letterbox advertising home-made relishes too hahaha!

I wonder if Howell gets paid?

This is Gardners Falls, basically just a very relaxing picnic area 5 minutes east of Maleny. To the right of this shot is a small waterfall and a deeper pond where people were diving in (and freezing their nuts off in the mountainous water).

Panorama from another lookout, also looking east towards the coast out over the Hinterland.

Montville, a very pretty little town in the middle of nowhere.

Montville buildings seem to have something of a European motif. Very cool.

Montville has an awesome little shop that sells confectionary of all kinds from the last decade or so. it also sells some naughty sweets up on the top shelf ;)

Just north of Montville is Kondalilla National Park. It was too bad the sun was setting as we arrived here - this place was really nice and would've been pretty relaxing had we had the time to enjoy it. After a decent bike ride I usually put stats up about distance etc. Well today I drove 264kms over 4 hours and 15 minutes (average speed 62.2km/h), and consumed 22.7 litres of fuel (average consumption 8.6l/100kms) - yes the Commodore tells you these things hehe! :)

Saturday, 6 May 2006 - Happy Birthday Buddha!

I happened upon this in South Bank on my way out tonight - a Buddha Birth Day festival apparently. The lanterns all over the place and along the walk ways, as well as the ice Buddha below and other bits and pieces on display, were pretty impressive :)

Sunday, 7 May 2006 - Byron Bay!

Next week is my last in Kingaroy, so I organised to pick the car up first thing this morning and again I had to make the most of it ;) This time I headed to Byron Bay, 160km south of Brisbane and across the Queensland state border into New South Wales. Several people have told me to go to Byron if I ever got a chance, so I threw the bike in the boot and went to see what all the hype was about. And yeah, it's a very cool place. Nice beaches, big houses, very busy town centre with hot chicks wandering around in skimpy bikinis...

Some kind of hippie festival on the beach...

And up on the hill, a lighthouse and the most eastern point of the Australian mainland.

I eventually found a place to park the Commodore, whipped the bike out and gave myself a good tour of the place. This is on the way up to the lighthouse looking back towards town.

And this is it, the most eastern point of Aussie. All I thought about was home being some 2,500kms over there - I miss it :) This is a great spot to see dolphins too apparently although I didn't spot any.

Shot from the lighthouse, also looking back towards town.
1800 246869 if you want to rent it ;)

I went home via the Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise for some grub. There never seems to be a lack of suped-up cars doing laps and burnouts along the esplanade hehe - I love it! Found this gorgeous R33 Skyline parked up - yummy! By the time I eventually got home I'd done 355kms in the car and a measly 10kms on the bike, of which two were spent trying to find where I'd parked the bloody car hahaha. I was getting worried for a minute - didn't feel like biking 180kms home!

Friday, 12 May 2006 - 4,000kms later and I'm spent!

After one last 60-hour work-week I'm now off the Tarong Power Station project (possible heading back up in July). The shot on the left is one of Tarong's two massive cooling towers that spew out masses of steam. It was a fine day with no clouds in the sky - what you see there is all steam! Over the last five weeks I've clocked up as many kilometres behind the wheel as I have behind the handlebars on the bike (a bit over 4,000) - love it!

I haven't stuck any email forwards up for a couple of weeks now so here is a beaut that did the rounds during the week at work.

Thursday, 18 May 2006 - Marriage!

Before marriage...

During marriage...

After the divorce!

Saturday, 20 May 2006 - Coochiemudlo Island!
I like to go for a good burn on the bike most every weekend and see at least something new, but after 4,500kms I'm really starting to run out of places I can go that I've never been to before. So, after scouring the map long and hard last night I found this little island 1km off the coast in Moreton Bay called Coochiemudlo Island (or Coochie as the locals call it). At only five square-kilometres in size I wasn't expecting much, but like I said - something new.

Coochie Island is 10kms south-east of Cleveland. I've banged on about Cleveland enough in the past so it needs no introduction :)

And this is Coochie, shot from Victoria Point. From here, it's a ten-minute ferry ride away.

Yup, there ain't much to it - taking the bike was almost overkill.

The southern beach looking back towards the mainland.

On Coochie, this is what they call a road. I call this a wide cycle path...

And they call this a road too - I call this an off-road trail ;)

And look, here's a 'busy intersection' hehe!

Roads aside there were a lot of bloody nice houses around, most of which had big-ass boats up the driveway instead of cars.

She was a little camera-shy ;)

Coochie also has its own rugby field (with a big slab of concrete right in the middle)...

A cute little golf course that looks like it has about two holes...

And some nice views of the mainland from atop the hill.

After about an hour I think I'd been pretty much covered everywhere I could go, and headed back to the 'main road' for the ferry.

Looking back at the main beach from the jetty. All in all Coochie is quite a nice little place, though I suggest exploring the place on foot rather than a bike else you'll be bored shitless after an hour.

Monday, 22 May 2006 - My Bro, the death-metalist!

Well my brother was in the local rag today (for good reasons hehe). Over the last few years he's developed a big interest in death-metal (of all genres) and evidently a real skill for it too. He's a member of a successful band that is fast getting a big following around Christchurch, plays at many gigs and competitions, and has attracted the attention of some important people in the industry. Despite the fact I don't share his taste for the genre (and it drives poor Mum nuts), he and his band are showing a lot of promise and so I'm very proud of him nonetheless :) And yes the hair is real!

Saturday, 27 May 2006 - Taxi!

This antique was sitting outside Suncorp Stadium today. There's an NRL game on at the stadium tonight between us (Brisbane Broncos) and the Canterbury Bulldogs, but what relevance this has to that I don't know. I wonder if cab drivers drove like idiots back then too? I got knocked off the bike (again) by a fucking taxi pulling out right in front of me on Wednesday night. I had a sore wrist for a couple of days but it's all good now, and once again the bike came out without a scratch hehe. The driver and I had it out in the middle of the road in the middle of town, then other people came over (who had seen everything) and had a go at him too hahaha. That's twice I've been taken out now in 4,500kms; in Christchurch I never got touched once!
