After a couple of nights at Plitvice, it was back on that fucking six-hour coach and then a three-hour catamaran out to the island of Korcula (pronounced kor-chew-la). The island is long and skinny with an area of 279 square kilometers making it the sixth largest island in the Adriatic Sea, and with around 16,000 inhabitants it's the second most populous.

We set up camp in the main city of the island (aptly named Korcula) which is the focus of most tourist activity on the island. This place was supposedly the first in the world to abolish slavery back in the 13th century, so that was pretty nice of them.

Korcula town is overlooked by the mountains on the mainland just a few kilometres across the sea which look really nice at sunrise / sunset.

The town itself has around 3,000 inhabitants spread over a fairly large area along the coast and back up into the surrounding hills. We were here just as the tourist season was coming to an end so it was probably a lot quieter than usual.

Many people throughout Croatia and the islands hoon around in these dinky little cars that sound like oversized lawn mowers hehe.

Back in the day, the city was completely fortified and walled in, and covered a much smaller area than it does today. Building outside of the walls was forbidden until the 18th century, and today only the south wall remains.

The walled city streets are aligned and angled in such a way that allows free circulation of air but protect against strong winds (so it would be the perfect place to bike around if not for the narrow and stepped streets).

The promenade along the east of the walled city is a great spot to stuff your face and check out the happenings on the sea, like granddad whizzing around on the inflatable.

Speaking of the sea check out how clear the water is!

Hahaha bugger!

Everywhere we visited had stray dogs wandering around looking for food, especially Korcula for some reason. This guy has a collar so he's obviously loved, but I had a stray come up to me while I was out and about one night that can't have been more than about a year old. I made the mistake of giving him a good sympathy pat, after which he bloody followed me around for about half an hour hahaha!

There's a great little outdoor cafe in town called Fresh* that was highly recommended by the Lonely Planet guide we had. This one in Korcula does the best smoothies and some bloody great tortilla wraps. There's another one in Dubrovnik that we visited towards the end of the trip that sells big 3-litre towers of beer hehe; more on that mess later.

One of the best things about travelling in foreign countries is the food they serve and how they serve it. I ordered fish, and that's literally what I got hahaha.

Later on in the night we were given two free shots of something resembling motor oil. I've no idea what this stuff was, but just smelling it could probably get you half pissed.

After a bit of self-motivation, down the hatch it all went, and I think Mo's reaction pretty much sums it up hahaha. The after-taste was of sultanas.

Aside from the stray dogs, stray cats never failed to appear at the dinner table and wander around begging for anything they could get hehe. They were looking pretty healthy though and they were all extremely friendly so I assume people must feed them.

This is looking along the west of the walled city...

Along the promenade...

And out towards the camping ground which was nicely nestled in its own little bay around the corner.
