New York (and surrounds), United States of America (20 February - 2 March 2008)

Jen turned the big 25 last month and has always wanted to see New York City in the winter, and a 25th birthday seemed as good of an excuse as any to do it now! I've been to New York once for a completely unplanned three-hour run around (and I did run a lot ;) during a stopover en route back to Edinburgh from Florida last April, and was keen to go back myself. We decided to do five nights in New York, and five nights on road heading south towards Washington, D.C. - the US capital. I was pretty put off by the fact it was winter but the idea of another American road-trip was just too tempting (and granted it would be cool to see New York in winter)! While searching out flights we came across a good deal on a day-trip to Niagara Falls in northwest New York State; again something I'd prefer to have done in summer but oh well (I'll go back when I move to Canada!). Below is our itinerary, and a map showing the route we took south from New York:

The best flights to New York were via Amsterdam, so we put in a six-hour stopover to have the best part of a few hours to run around the town - nice! :)

Our plane to Amsterdam was a Fokker (anybody seen Meet The Parents? ;) I'd never heard of a Fokker plane so I Google'd it and this is what I found hahaha, brilliant! I bet the passengers of that plane said "Fok!" a few times.

The Fokkers have their engines at the very rear of the plane; this was my view from the second-to-last row at the back. Needless to say the couple behind us in the very back row had a real mother fokker of a view - the side of a big jet hehe.

After a 60-minute flight and a 20-minute train we were in the land of clogs! Fun fact for the day: I'm one quarter Dutch :)

Amsterdam in a nutshell: canals...

...sex...

...and grass.

This pretty much sums up the last two shots. In Paris they make love, sweet romantic love. In Amsterdam they have sex, dirty dirty sex ;) Good salt and pepper shakers huh.

And Amsterdam just wouldn't be Amsterdam with the bicycle!

Walk out of Central Station, head right, and this is what you find: three storeys of row upon row of bikes - I'm in heaven!

Bikes, bikes, bikes - of all shapes, sizes, and uses.

Hahaha - that would be me!

Come on Jen, keep up now - we've only got a couple hours...

While checking out the canals I first thought what I was to subsequently think several times throughout this whole trip: this place would be a lot nicer in summer! The dead-looking trees just don't do it for me (and neither was the temperature).

Winter (and cold) aside, Amsterdam is a bloody nice city and I plan on coming back here for my own birthday in June.

I might even bring my bike with me :)

Impressive!

En route back to the train station we checked out a few of the dodgy side-streets towards the red light district, and the smell of weed in the air was pretty pungent!

Indeed.

No queuing for a bite to eat either, for just a Euro you can buy a burger that was probably made last week!

I favoured a nearby cafe instead, and gave half my food to this drug addict-looking pigeon.

He wasn't getting any of my of my dessert though.
