Wednesday, 16 May 2007 - 2006/07 UEFA Cup Final, Hampden Park, Glasgow!

The Spanish have come to Glasgow! The 2006/07 UEFA Cup Final is being played at Hampden Park tonight. The weather was its usual crappy self but the whole city was abuzz during lunch!

Team #1: Defending champions Sevilla (Seville) had George Square all to themselves.

They made the most of it by pitching a huge marquee, getting drunk in it, then going for a run down the road. The chanting coming out of the marquee was amazing!

This dude brought his girlfriend to the party, and yes it certainly was cold today. As you can see, he kept a firm grip on her at all times.

Team #2: Espanyol (Barcelona) had Merchant City all packed out and boozed up. Both teams had similar partying styles: get drunk, run around, and chant :)

Both teams had their own entertainment to keep them amused.

Hahaha!

This guy saw the New Zealand Silver Fern on my jacket and got suspiciously excited hehe. Everyone loves a Kiwi!

30 seconds later this car turned left and he almost ended up celebrating with his face embedded in the road hehe!

Spirits were high, and so too was the police presence, though there was no trouble as far as I know.

Scotland with style? Scotland's anus is more like it.

"Glasgow: The anus of Scotland."

Wednesday, 16 May 2007 - Hooray for work trips!
I fly out tonight for London, and out again at the crack of dawn tomorrow for Italy. Final destination: Napitia, for an all-expenses-paid four-day booze-fuelled trip with work hehe. This year is my company's 15th year in business, and they sure know how to celebrate. They've hired out the whole Club Med resort in Napitia for around half of us. It's gonna be messy! A couple years back they took everyone for a pre-Christmas trip down to Tunisia (where some of Star Wars was filmed). So you lot have a good weekend, and there should be some nice drunken shots on here come next week! :)

Tuesday, 22 May 2007 - And I'm back - 24 hours late!
Yup, I've made it back after a bloody awesome weekend, made even better by the cancellation of our flights home on Sunday due to strike action by Alitalia cabin crew! We had to spend an extra day and night in Italy (what a shame) which proved to be an experience, and due to the way the new flights worked out we got a three-hour stopover in Milan during which I did another New York and ran around like an idiot, seeing and shooting as much as I could in 35-degree heat within about 90 minutes! I've got a few hundred photos to sort through so keep checking back :)

Friday, 25 May 2007 - Italy photos!
All the shots from my excursion to Italy with work last weekend are here. Next holiday: Belgium next weekend for my birthday :)

Monday, 28 May 2007 - Flying Gonzo!
It's Monday, you're at work, you don't want to be there, so here's a little something to take your mind off it for a while - Flying Gonzo :)

Wednesday, 30 May 2007 - Happy birthday to me!
This Friday the 1st of June I turn a quarter-century! And in sticking with my little rule of having never gone to school nor work on my birthday, I'm off to Belgium tomorrow for a long weekend hehe. Jen's coming along too and I expect there'll be a lot of beer drinking (good beer in Belgium!), eating of chocolate and waffles, and of course, cycling :) For those who know Belgium we're flying into Brussels and then jumping straight on a train for Bruges. Two days later we head to Antwerp for a day and night, and the following day it's back to Brussels for the day before flying out that night. So happy quarter-century to me!

Monday, 4 June 2007 - Back again, and a year older...

Well I'm back from an awesome birthday-weekend in Belgium (and a little bit in the Netherlands too as it turns out - yet another unplanned trip), and was greeted by this on my bedroom door courtesy of my flatmates hehe! 450 photos to sort through so keep checking back :)

Thursday, 7 June 2007 - Sometimes this crap weather just becomes too much!

Here we go again. For the second time in three days some clown decides to hold up the trains, the buses, the traffic, and the pedestrians by threatening to jump off North Bridge above Edinburgh's main train station, on one of Edinburgh's arterial roads in and out of the city. This is not an uncommon event, and why they give these dickheads the time of day is beyond me. I've only ever heard of one person actually going through with it and that was a couple of years ago; the rest of them just want a little attention. By the time I got here (after behind stuck in a delayed train from work) he'd been wandering around up there for three hours and wasting everybody's time hehe. Having said that I didn't wait around for a conclusion, so if I find out tomorrow he went for it then I may regret having putting this up ;)

Friday, 8 June 2007 - Belgium photos!
All the shots from my birthday weekend in Belgium are up. Enjoy :)

Saturday, 8 June 2007 - Hooray for sun!

Hooray for the weekend and hooray for a little sun - finally! It's not hard to see how much the Brit's love the sun, nor how little of it they normally get.

Damn, that's white!

Down the road in Inverleith Park there was some random hippy tree-hugging festival going on.

This guy brought his own from home.

I'm not sure what it was all about but there were a lot of wood-related exhibits around as well as mountain bike stunts (which I enjoyed), glass blowing, food stalls, herbal medicine stalls, and hippy story telling. Very random. Hooray for sun!

Thursday, 14 June 2007 - Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow

The weather has been a bit crap again lately so I haven't been able to get out much. Instead, during lunch today I went for a wander in the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow (outside which is the statue of the dude that always has a road cone on his head hahaha!). The only thing I know about art is that it makes no bloody sense to me. Those fluorescent lights - that's art. The two wooden cylinders with whatever that is in there - that's art. And this thing stuck on the wall - well that's art too.

There's a lot of random stuff in GoMA and it's quite a good place to waste half an hour in, but the most amusing display I found was these photos of old school-yard weapons hahaha! On the left we have the classic ping-the-nails-at-your-mate-with-the-rubber-band, in the middle we have a slightly more extreme version for the kids with violent dispositions, and on the right we have the good ol' flame thrower for the real psychos among us. Brilliant!

Apparently with this one you empty your dick in the bottle, pour it into the balloon, and add water.

This was pretty cool too - a hydrogen-cell bike! I spent 10 minutes trying to figure this thing out. However it works I bet it does good burnouts!

Sunday, 17 June 2007 - Hooray for cycle paths!

Mo bought herself a new bike on Wednesday and so we made the most of the sun (while it lasted) to go for a burn :) This is the Water of Leith path that follows this river as it meanders past people's back doors. I had no idea this was even here, and this section of path starts only five minutes around the corner from my flat! Just goes to show how rarely I can get out and explore with this damn weather :(

Bloody nice huh! The only problem with it is the path is quite narrow in parts and swarming with pedestrians, but that's why I have an air horn on the bike :)

The path eventually pops out behind Murrayfield Stadium and continues on for a way, but we took a detour and ended up on the Union Canal. This thing stretches for 50km between Edinburgh and Falkirk with a pedestrian/cycle path following it the whole way. In Falkirk the path continues for another 50kms into Glasgow's city centre. The entire 100km path from Edinburgh to Glasgow is one I intend to ride as soon as I can get a full day's worth of decent weather forecast.

Wednesday, 20 June 2007 - Nice night for a ride!

It was really warm after work today with a bit of sun around so Mo and I went for another bike ride to make the most of it while it lasts (because it never does). What about those big black clouds just off in the distance? Nah, nothing to worry about ;) Well about half an hour later we were riding home again in a thunder storm while getting drenched hahaha! My street is on a short hill and this was the scene when I finally got back home.
