Cabo San Lucas (23 - 27 September 2019)

It's been more than two years since Kristina and I have had anything resembling a vacation, so we felt we were due for one. Furthermore, it was ten years ago this month that we first met - perfect excuse! Cabo San Lucas and the nearby city of San José Del Cabo are located on the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula on the Pacific Ocean - one of the more popular tourist spots in Mexico. As is often the case, Kristina had free accommodation nights owed to her thanks to being a travel agent, so we left Jade with her grandparents for the week and off we went!

After two short and uneventful flights we arrived at the all-inclusive Secrets Puerto Los Cabos Golf & Spa Resort, not that we planned on doing much golfing (and nor did anyone else - we didn't see a single person out there hitting a ball). This is an adults-only resort and is targeted at couples rather than groups of people wanting to get drunk and rowdy. Back in September 2014 a record-breaking hurricane slammed into Cabo and devastated the area. Five years later and the tourism industry here is as busy as ever.

After wandering round for a bit and getting the lay of the land, we hit one of the four dinner restaurants on the resort - this one a seafood restaurant. I like to order anything that sounds interesting and I've maybe not had before. Octopus seemed to fit the bill, and here it is hehe. It certainly looked interesting, and damn it was tasty!

The next day our plan was to do... nothing. And that's exactly what we did.

We started by checking out the beach. Most of the beaches in this area, including this one, are not swimmable due to dangerous undercurrents, which is a bummer.

Although the beach is off-limits, the resort's main pool is large, awesome, and was almost empty given it was early in the week.

Given Kristina is (very) pregnant, alcohol was also off-limits for her. Too bad. Instead she watched me indulge in the free booze while she indulged in the booze-free options. This pretty much sums up our day :)

The next day we did what we always like to do - go exploring. We rented a car from the resort (with a manual transmission no less; oh how I miss driving a manual) and headed into San José Del Cabo. San José is the quieter of the two cities with more of an 'old Mexico' charm. Its center is a good spot to wander, check out the endless array of souvenir shops (most of them selling more-or-less the same crap), and then leave again.

20 miles along the coast is Cabo San Lucas, the entertainment and debauchery hub of the area, and supposedly one of the hottest party towns in all of North America. We headed straight for the beach, which although not swimmable is pretty damn nice nonetheless! The city's marina here is also worth a wander.

This is the view from another resort that Kristina arranged a quick look through. One of the most popular activities and attractions in Cabo is to get on a boat and cruise out to the very tip of the peninsula on the right over there to see the famous arch of Cabo. We didn't bother paying to go see some rocks, but maybe next time.

Our fourth and final full day was spent much like our second - doing nothing except eating, drinking, and getting (more) tanned in the pool. The resort has a few bars on site, some with live music after dark, which are good for... more drinking, so we hit those up as well. For an all-inclusive resort we were pretty impressed with, well, everything, not least of all the food from their seafood, Italian, Japanese, and Mexican restaurants. So, good stuff Secrets!

On our final night we returned to our room to find this on the bed (we'd told them it was our 10-year anniversary - not a complete lie), and the hot tub full of bubble bath. Nice touch.

And that was that! Maybe in another two years we'll go somewhere else.
