Western Europe (2 September - 7 October 2006)

Earlier this year, Mo started planning a trip through western and southern Europe and invited me to join her. Our itinerary and a map with our route are below...

Mo didn't join me for the week in London; it was for me to assess the best place to set up camp in the UK for the next few years - Edinburgh or London. During the trip we took a total of over 1,300 photos between us, and sorting through them all and narrowing them down was a real bastard of a job hehe! Having said that, after putting this section together, I'm a bit pissed I didn't get photos of more things to give a better idea of each place from my perspective, but oh well. Next time, when this isn't all so new to me :) Click a link below...

Neither of us wanted to go back home (not that I can really call it that yet). Mo had to start back at work the very next day, and I had to start setting up a life somewhere in the UK. We'd only been gone a month but it felt much longer. While we were away, the Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin was killed on the Great Barrier Reef in a freak accident with a stingray while filming a documentary. Just days later, rally legend Peter Brock was killed during a race when he lost control on a hairpin corner in wet conditions and his car slammed into a tree. And just days later again, a meteorite was seen and heard screaming over Christchurch (I wish I'd been there to see that!).

For the month spent in Europe (not including London), the whole trip cost me approximately €3,000 (NZ$5,500; AU$5,000; £2,000). That includes accommodation, food, Eurail train pass, spending money - the whole lot except for flights to and from, and I wasn't overly tight with money over there so that may serve as a rough guide for somebody.
